Make Mexican Paper Decorations

June 17th, 2008

Teresitas Mexican DecorationThis is a simple and interesting paper decoration. Just a few paper sheets, folds, cut and you get an almost-free awesome decoration.

I can’t believe how expensive are all those paper decorations at the party stores. Why not have some fun and make your own paper decorations?

My mother taught me how to make this paper craft. I’m not sure how she learned to make it. I think she is the inventor of this decoration as no one else makes it. I don’t even know the name of this Mexican paper craft, so I will call it Teresitas, in her honor.

DIY Homemade WiFi Lid/Wok Antenna.

June 15th, 2008

DIY Homemade WiFi Lid WOk AntennaA homemade Antenna using a USB Wifi adapter, a lid and some wood. I got 13dB gain. This was a great and easy DIY.

Before I start, Let’s see what is a “WiFi Lid” or also known as “WiFi Wok” Antenna:

Also known as WokFi (a portmanteau derived from blending Wok + Wi-Fi) is a term now commonly used to indicate a style of Wi-Fi antenna made out of simple low-cost Asian cookware scoops, or similar easy to find household metallic reflective items.

WokFi antennas can be fabricated out of commonly available scoop-shaped utensils (which need not be perfectly parabolic) in conjunction with a USB Wi-Fi dongle. This approach is considered simpler and cheaper than classical home-built antenna projects (such as the popular Cantenna), but is a very effective method to boost the Wi-Fi connection quality, audit access point coverage, and even quickly establish WLAN viability — perhaps if a more professional setup is eventually intended.

[Source: Wikipedia]

I did purchase a Hi-Gain WiFi antenna one year ago that gave me 14dB signal gain, but after a while, I decided to build my own as I saw it on http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz

Crazy News and ‘Right Arm’ Check

June 7th, 2008

While reading the news today, I found this one:

Man accused of leaving kids to pick wild asparagus.

SPENCER, Iowa - A northwest Iowa man accused of leaving two children in his car while he picked wild asparagus along a busy highway south of Spencer has been charged with child endangerment. The Clay County sheriff’s office says the man was arrested Wednesday night after a passer-by spotted the children.

Excuse me, that means is safer to leave the children OUTSIDE the car along a busy highway?

Do you think that is crazy? Not even closer. This one is a crazy one:

How To Make a Speaker

June 5th, 2008

Homemade DIY speaker made with a plastic cupFeatured at ABC NewsA homemade speaker using a plastic cup, business card, wire, magnet and some Lego blocks. I built this speaker from scratch; I was surprised of the quality of the sound. Updated!

I doesn’t look like a high-tech speaker but it works well. I didn’t expect a high-quality sound from this homemade speaker but it performs very well, better than I expected.

A speaker is just a magnet, a coil, frame and a cone or any material that can make the air vibrate. [Speaker made with a Penny and aluminum foil are just a lame hoax.]

Getting Started with Microcontroller PICs

June 4th, 2008

Microcontroller PICsIdeas, tips and how to getting started with microcontrollers projects.

Microcontrollers are, basically, a computer in a single chip. It contains memory, processor, I/O ports (I/O = Input/Output) and other peripherals. Can you believe a single chip does contain RAM, ROM, CPU, I/O Ports, timers and other gadgets? It only needs a keyboard and display to be a working computer…

…I almost forgot; It also needs Software.

Microcontrollers are expensive compared with CMOS or TTLs chips, but using it on any electronic project allows to save parts and money. Here is an example of the same project using Microcontroller and without microcontrollers:

How To Make a Paper Plane

June 4th, 2008

Homemade diy paper planeI can’t believe some stores are selling foam planes up to $2.95 USD a piece. Here are the instructions how to make a simple, yet effective, paper airplane. It really flies!

I’m not a professional origami maker, but I know how to make some things using paper. It doesn’t require engineer degree or something like that, just paper and free time.

Foam airplanes costs $0.50 USD but some stores sells it with a price of $1.00 USD, Last weekend I saw it for sale with a price of $2.95 USD. I can’t believe people actually purchases it for their kids. I wonder if today kids doesn’t know how to make their own toys.

My paper airplane costs less than a penny, just get a paper sheet and that’s it! You may use some pencil colors to make it nice but you really don’t need it.

Growing Salt Crystals

May 23rd, 2008

Growing Salt cube crystalCommon salt, also known as sodium chloride or NaCl, have an interesting cystal structure. Water, Salt and lots of patience for one week, are the ingredients to grow salt crystals and get an easy science project.

Here is a homemade Salt Crystal that I did grow. Not a complicated DIY project but I got interesting results.

I saw a “Crystal growing” kit at the store one week ago, it shows nice and colorful crytals for science projects. I wonder; Why I should pay $10.00 USD just to see crystal growing? Using common salt and water, I can grow my own crystals. Not fancy crystals and colorful like the $10.00 one, but looks interesting anyway.

Did you find my DOLLAR BILL?

May 21st, 2008

My dollar bill lost, this is a photo of the dollar bill that im looking forCan you help me to find my Dollar bill?

I’m trying to find how far can a dollar bill can travel, going hand by hand, day after day. Could you help me to find it?

Today, February 25, 2007, while visiting the flea market, I found a dollar bill on the floor. I almost never pick up something from the floor, but this time, I found quite interesting this dolar bill and I picked it up.

I guess a kid lost it after looking for some toys. I’m sorry for that kid. Anyway, I tried to give it back, but there was no kid crying or saying anything about “I lost my dollar”. I was thinking: “I will give it away to any kid that wants to buy a toy” or something like that, but later, I thought: “I guess is better to give it to someone that really need it, like a homeless guy or something like that”.

This is one of my favorites websites, it explains how to make toys; science toys.

All science toys and projects on that website are accessible (so cheap to make that nobody is excluded because of cost, and they don’t require special skills, tools, materials, or work facilities beyond a kitchen.

How To Repair Dell E172Fbp Display

May 19th, 2008

How to repair Dell LCD displaysHere are the instructions, and photos, how I did fix my DELL display E172Fbp LCD with a “flashing power light”. This repair also works for model E171Fbp and E173Fbp. It may solve the “black screen” problem. An $8.00 USD repair.

Appears DELL LCD display (and similar models) have a common problem with the inverter circuit. Transistors goes bad and needs to be replaced.

This display have a nice screen, high definition and a pure-white back light, but after a few months of use, the display just goes black sometimes until, finally, it doesn’t power on anymore. The green power light just flashes.

As I had the bad luck to own one, I decided to fix it by myself and save $$$. First, I did a research on Internet and I found this problem is a common failure on DELL displays. Some websites indicates the transistors on the inverter goes bad.
